It all started with an interview…
On October 13, 2021 HU2H’s founder, Donna A. Michaels, was featured on a popular podcast hosted by Navy SEALs, Marcus & Morgan Luttrell, identical twin brothers, each with their own story of heroism and overcoming what many would consider impossible odds.
Michaels was invited to speak about her book, a memoir entitled Courageously Broken, which began as a personal journal about the adversities she had experienced throughout her life, ultimately leading to the diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
During that interview, she spoke about some of her experiences and what it was like to travel down the dark path that nearly led to her taking her own life. Additionally, she spoke of how she survived that dark path and the life lessons she learned from that journey.
In the weeks and months that followed her interview, she heard from countless veterans, first responders and family members of both, all asking the same question… “Where can I find help without my leadership finding out what I’m dealing with?”
Michaels understood that question all too well as she had experience the exact same fears. She realized the need to provide information on all the different resources outside the VA and health insurance options. Many nonprofit resources are available to veterans and first responders who can provide assistance and maintain the confidentiality of those they help.
In 2022, Michaels founded Heroes United to Heal and launched this website with the hope of assisting as many heroes as possible. By developing a “one stop shop” for those seeking help privately and confidentially, it is her hope their journey can begin here.
Additionally, it became clear there was a need to financially support some of the resources who depended on donations to do business. Occassionally, HU2H will assist with fundraising various resources they have vetted so they can continue to save the lives of our country’s bravest.
Overcoming PTSD Stigma
“I became dangerously close to becoming a 22 statistic,” she recalled.
A 22 statistic refers to the chilling data showing 22 veterans lose their battle to PTSD on American soil every day—that is one veteran every 65 minutes. The same is true of our first responders.
“We’re all human we all have a breaking point,” Michaels said.
